Geelong to host its second Nicholas Cage film
Geelong will again be the backdrop for a Nicholas Cage film.
Part of the Hollywood actor's latest big budget US production - Knowing - will be filmed in Geelong's northern suburbs in coming weeks.
Knowing is a film which follows the heroic efforts of a father who has decoded a series of numbers from a child's letter contained in a time capsule buried 50 years ago. The numbers correspond with past and future disasters which ultimately lead to the destruction of earth by natural forces.
The scene being filmed in Geelong will involve Cage's character rescuing victims from a plane crash.
"This is the second Nicholas Cage film to be shot in our region, which is a very big coup for us," City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr Bruce Harwood said, "Just less than three years ago he was here filming the US blockbuster Ghost Rider."
Cr Harwood said the City had worked hard to lure major productions to our region.
"Through Film Geelong, we've earned a reputation among film makers as being a supportive and flexible production environment," he said.
"We've attracted an impressive list of large scale productions in recent years, which include Ghost Rider, Where the Wild Things Are, December Boys and the yet-to-be-released Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg television series Pacific."
"Productions filmed in our region deliver considerable economic and tourism benefits and provide jobs for local people."
Cr Harwood said Film Geelong's new website, which showcases the broader region's diverse film locations, would help entice more filmmakers to shoot film and television productions in the wider Geelong area.
"The new website is a one-stop shop for Australian and international filmmakers looking for several different film locations within close proximity of one another."
"It's a vital tool for showcasing the wider region's vast selection of rural, coastal, hinterland and city locations," Cr Harwood said.
